The Birthday That Built a Foundation

Before There Was a Foundation

Before there was a website, a toolkit, or a pilot plan, there was a birthday.

It was JJ’s birthday. There was cake on the table, kids running through the house, and boxes stacked by the door. The difference was what was inside those boxes.

Instead of bringing traditional gifts, we invited friends to bring new toys to be donated.

Not because we wanted to take something away from our son. Not because we wanted to make a statement. But because we wanted to create a moment that reflected the values we talk about in our home.

And honestly, we did not know exactly how it would go.

At one point, all the donated toys were dumped into the middle of the floor and played with one last time. There was joy, imagination, laughter. No one needed a planned activity. The play just happened.

Something about that moment stayed with us.

These were toys that had been chosen with care. Toys that were wanted. Toys that could easily have stayed. But they were going somewhere else.

There was something powerful about celebrating fully while also understanding that joy could move beyond our own home.

It was not low stakes. It was not effortless. And that is part of why it mattered.

Giving when it is convenient feels good. Giving when it asks something of you builds something deeper.

That birthday made us realize something we could not ignore. Many families want to raise children with gratitude, empathy, and generosity. But wanting those values is not the same as practicing them.

Values do not become strong through discussion alone. They become strong through repetition, especially in moments that stretch us.

Birthdays are simply one anchor point. They are a cultural moment where receiving is expected. Choosing to integrate giving into that moment creates space for conversation that might not happen otherwise.

Less of Me grew out of that realization.

We are not asking families to give just to give. Families can donate anytime. What we are building is structure. Guidance. Connection. A way to pause and intentionally practice the values that often get crowded out by daily life.

And we remove the mental load. We connect families to local nonprofits that need specific items. We provide conversation guides. We help turn a well-meaning idea into a meaningful experience.

Strong communities do not start with large institutions. They start at home.

That birthday was the first step.

Not perfect. Not polished. Just real.

And from that real moment, Less of Me began.
